Coal mining, instead of gold gave the city its beginning. Although gold doesn't dominate the history, colorful myths about secret tunnels and government-involved gun fights certainly does! While the stories of connecting tunnels under a series of taverns on Front Street have proved to be unfounded, telling the tales remains a favorite with locals, who also claim bragging rights as being home to the oldest operating tavern in the state. Built sometime in the 1880s and known only by its address, 740 Front Street remains a town favorite.

Money Magazine may have brought Louisville to everyone's attention with its ranking of the town as the "Best Place to Live" in 2009, but the caring residents keep it there with good neighbor attitudes and friendly get-togethers at events like the annual Louisville Street Faire each summer.
